How to Clean Fireplace Glass Doors Easily

One of the best things of having a fireplace in your home is the visual appeal of seeing the fire and experiencing the heat from it as well. However, over time you can have soot build up from the fire on the glass doors and it completely ruins the visual appeal whether or not you have a fire in your hearth.

So, how do you clean that stubborn soot from your glass doors? Is there really an easy way to do this quickly and with little effort? Well, there are several ways that you can try to clean your fireplace glass doors, but you need to keep one important consideration in mind no matter what you try.

Glass can scratch easily if you use an abrasive material to clean soot from it. So, keeping that in mind, you don’t want to use anything like an abrasive scrub pad or steel wool. Even using something as simple as a powder cleaner can cause the glass to scratch.

So, what are the different ways that you can try to clean your fireplace glass doors? Let’s take a look at some of them.

Use a Razor Blade to Clean Your Glass Doors

One of the methods that you can use is to scrape the soot from the glass doors in your fireplace. This is a good method, but you need to use caution due to the sharpness of the razor. Just like if you are trying to remove a sticker from your auto glass windows, use slow and steady pressure to slide and scrape the soot from the glass.

One method that you can use is to soak the glass with regular water to help loosen the soot from the glass. Also, you can try a biodegradable cleaner such as Simple Green or Dawn dishwashing soap to help loosen soot.

Use Ammonia to Clean Your Fireplace Glass

Another method to use is after you have cleaned as much soot or stains from the glass that you can is to try ammonia. Ammonia is a very powerful cleaner and it can also help remove soot. Take a soft rag and be sure to take the glass outside or into a well ventilated area before using the ammonia. A little dab of ammonia on the rag and some “elbow grease” should help clean the soot from the glass.

Using Fireplace Ashes to Clean Fireplace Glass Doors

Another rumored method to clean your fireplace glass doors might sound a little counter productive, however some people say that it works well. Remove the fireplace glass from the holder and take some of the ashes from your hearth. Wet the glass and a rag, dip the rag into the fireplace ashes and rub the glass.

This is rumored to remove the soot from the glass, although I have not tried this method myself, some people swear by it.

While cleaning your fireplace door glass can take some time and effort, the results are often money saving in the long run. Depending upon what glass you have, it can be expensive to replace. Finding a good glass cleaner will also help you determine the best method with a little experimentation, just keeping in mind to limit or not use any strong abrasive materials as they can scratch the glass.
